Urban IoTs being designed to support the Smart City vision, that aims to make use of the best communication technologies so as to support added-value services for the administration of the city and for the citizens.

This paper provides a brief survey of the technologies, protocols, and architecture for a urban IoT system. IOT is one of my areas of interest, other Signal/Image Processing. I look to work on an interesting project in this domain in near future.

This paper has certainly furthered my knowledge and understaing about Urban IoT systems by providing me insights into the applications and future prospectives a number of possible applications of IoT. It also helped me learn about a practical implementation of an IoT system, called “Padova Smart City,” in a city called Pandova. This was implemented as a result of a collaboration between public and private parties, the municipality of the city, which has sponsored the project, the Department of Information Engineering of the University of Padova, which provided the theoretical background and feasibility analysis of the project, and Patavina Technologies, a spin-off company of the University of Padova, that specializes in the development of IoT solutions, and helped in the development of IoT nodes and the control software.In future, communication equipment could be developed so as to let health applications that run on joggers’ devices can get connected to the infrastructure. In this way, people would always find the healthiest path for outdoor activities and can be always connected to their preferred personal training application. The development of such a service needs that air quality and pollution sensors be deployed all over the city and also, the sensor data should be made available to all the citizens. This system makes it possible to collect parameters of interest such as, the CO level, air temperature, humidity, vibrations, noise, alongside providing a simple and accurate mechanism to check the correct operation of the public lighting system by measuring the light intensity at each post.

 Though it is a really simple application of the IoT, this system involves a number of different devices and linked layer technologies, and hence is representative of many critical issues that are required to be taken care of in the process of design of an Urban IoT.
