My topic is the roles of women during world war one. In this research paper you will find out and learn about women who, created groups and organizations, help in the military, made supplies, working as a replacement for men, and the different types of classes. The roles of women varied from what was needed in america and overseas. I think that women helped a lot maybe even more than men, because most of the mean were either fighting in the war of running a business or working. One of the first roles that I’m going to talk about is the hello girls. An example of the hello girls is, ” The Army Signal Corps recruited women to serve as bilingual telephone operators, or “Hello Girls,” to help run vital military communications in Europe.” (The National Museum of American History, Women in World war I, 2018) Another example is, ” In France, 223 American women popularly known as “Hello Girls” served as long-distance switchboard operators for the U.S Army Signal Corps.” (The National Museum of American History, Women in World war I, 2018) This shows that this was a role of women in World War I because, hello girls help that army to communicate with europe and help the army to fight and get inside information.Women working for the military was a one of the biggest roles for women during world war I. An example of this is, ” Women gathered to organize war bond drives, roll bandages and prepare supplies for soldiers.” (Heidi Hemming and Julie Hemming Savage, Women Making America, 2009) The second example is, there was 11,000 women enlisted as navy “yeomanettes” and 305 became marine corps “marinette’s.” (Heidi Hemming and Julie Hemming Savage, Women Making America, 2009) The third example is, ” Women in war had the same responsibilities and benefits as men including indenical pay of $28.75 per month. They received honorable discharges and were treated as veterans eligible for veterans benefits.” ( Drawing America to Victory, Women During World War I, 2018) This proves that this was one of the roles for women during World War I because, women helped to make, serve, and get the same benefits was the men. Also it was kind of a shocker to me that women got the same benefits as the men did when serving in the war. The other biggest role for women in the war were women serving as nurses. This is a big example for women during World War I because, without them we could have never been able to fight or heal our soldiers to go fight again. For example, “20,00 women served as Red Cross nurses.” (Heidi Hemming and Julie Hemming Savage, Women Making America, 2009). Another example is, ” During the Great War, 21,498 U.S. Army nurses and 1,476 U.S. Navy nurses served in military hospitals in the United States and overseas. It was the first time Army and Navy Military nurses performed active duty abroad.” ( Drawing America to Victory, Women During World War I, 2018). This explains That nurses were one of the biggest roles for women in the war because, without them we could have never been able to fight or heal our soldiers to go fight again. Also Without the nurses we could have never been able to be healthy enough to fight or ever be able to stay alive.
