Yoga can be describe as Wisdom in work. Yoga is considered as skillful living. Yoga is control of though waves in the mind. Yoga is the process of gaining self-enforcement, self- realization and self-improvement. Patanjali, the compiler of Yoga/sutra, made a great contribution to the Yoga philosophy and recognized as the father of Yoga Philosophy- Defines Yoga as, the control of though waves in the chitta(mind) Patanjali described the chitta as a collective aspects of manas, Budhi and Ahamkara, which get controlled through the praise of yoga. Three aspects Manas- is the modification of the impressions gathered by the senses from the external world.
Budhi (intellect) is the modification of these impressions and its reactions. Ahamkara (ego) is the modification of the inner organ, than claims these impressions as personal. Yoga is a science as well as art. Yoga is a conscious and systematic process to accelerate the growth of human mind. Yoga is treated as a Science through which wisdom (knowledge) of body position and systems are known and improved. Yoga is also described as an art, which leads to skillful living, harmony and moderation.
Yoga is a science and art that help human to develop a deep awareness of one’s body, mind and intellect level. Yoga as a science brings us the assessment of internal external forces and yoga as an art bring us the proper utilization of internal-external forces. Yoga is the best curative and preventive medicine for most of the disorders in human body systems. Yoga is an ancient art and science existed with the synonyms with true living and true freedom. Yoga existed in India and all parts of the world more than ten thousand years age. In the Vedic age itself yoga was well practised and messages of the Bhagavad Gita, Mahabharata, and Ramayana are closely, related and influenced with the theories of Yoga. Yoga arose at the beginning of human civilization whom man realized his spiritual potential and begin to evolve techniques to develop it. Some traditions believe that yoga was a divine gift revealed to the ancient sages so that mankind could have the opportunity to realize its divine nature.
According to mythical tradition, Shiva is said to be the founder of yoga and Parvati, his first discipline. As per the Oxford Dictionary Yoga is described as a Hindu system of philosophic meditation and asterism designed to affect the reunion of the devotee’s soul with the universal spirit. As per the Patanjali philosophy Yoga is freedom and release from sorrows. As per Bhagvad Gita Yoga is approached as Karma Yoga (Yoga by action) which indicate work alone is privilege, not the fruits.
As per the Mahabharata Yoga is said to be deliverance from contact with pain and sorrow. As per Ramayana Yoga is performed as a moral discipline out testraints ( Niyama). It extols virtues like righteousness (Dharma), non/violence (Ahimsa), truth fullness (Satya ) and penarice ( tapas).
In the modern concept Yoga is believed as an essential practice for skill in action. Yoga increases our inner strength, develop intellect, control our emotions and make one more efficient to perform actions more skillfully. In the modern living “Yoga” is said to be the best curative and preventative medicines. .
Yoga in the modern term can be best understood as the technique of holistic living.
