Letters to the editor: Floridians are feeling the pain from insurance
Re: "Tax-cut double talk means higher premiums" (letters, Jan. 28).
I was glad that I am not the only one with an increase in property insurance. My insurance increased 40.32 percent. Also, I must pay a hurricane deductible of $3,300.
If we save anything on the property taxes, all that money will not stimulate the state, since all will go to the insurance companies. Gov. Crist has a larger problem than he ever imagined!

Legislators failed to do their jobs with proposal
I compliment the Tallahassee Democrat on its thorough presentation of both sides of the Amendment 1 issue. Your coverage was both voluminous and comprehensive, as befits an issue of such importance to our present and our future.
What I found most striking about the entire passionate and divisive debate is that there was even a need for such a debate at all.
On everything concerning property taxes, at every level and at every turn, our legislators have failed us miserably. For them to offer us a constitutional amendment that split the voters down the middle, and does it in a way that inspires such venomous attacks, is truly unconscionable.
Their astonishingly lame attempt at property-tax reform places every single house and business in the entire state at a differing tax base! Was this senseless mish-mash really, honestly, the best they could come up with? If so, we don't just need property-tax equality, we need to clear the Legislature of these lightweight goofballs and elect some folks with character, common sense and a conscience.

"Good letter Sonny. Another problem is taxing methods that pit taxpayers against other taxpayers. We now have over 100 taxes. The system is too complicted and promotes neighbor against neighbor, taxpayer against taxpayer, and taxtaker against taxpayer, see Rob Peter ... Pay Paul. TTP Rating: Five Hats." Pace![]()

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Stop wild government spending with your vote
Cities and counties, every state and the federal government are trying their best to spend themselves out of business, destroying what once was America, just like Russia was once the Soviet Union.
Any government of any kind in our country has not one thin dime to spend until it's extorted from We the People. This extortion is done in our name at the worst of times and if we don't stop this spending by going to the voting booth, then we're heading down the same path as the former Soviet Union.
Is this the fate that We the People want for America? If it is, it's going to our own fault, period.

"Vote against SJR 2-D, no matter the reasons." Pace
Article published Jan 10, 2008 Tallahassee Democrat
Letters to the editor: Voter education group opposes tax proposal
The League of Women Voters opposes proposed state constitutional amendment SJR 2-D, which will be on the special election ballot on Jan. 29, because it would:
· Add limitations and exemptions regarding revenue sources to the Florida Constitution.
· Extend and increase homestead tax limitations without regard to the ability of homeowners to pay.
· Extend the inequities of Save Our Homes by allowing homeowners to transfer its benefits.
· Worsen Florida's current infrastructure deficit and the decline in the level of state services and in our quality of life.
The League of Women Voters has long held that tax sources and revenues should not be specified, limited, exempted or prohibited in the state constitution and that local governments in Florida should have available a variety of options for generating revenues.
The proposed amendment contravenes this principle in several ways.
In addition, the League of Women Voters believes that property taxes should be based on ability to pay, and that tax relief or circuit breakers should be provided for all low-income people who own or rent property.
Save Our Homes is not based on ability to pay and has introduced a bias against more recent homebuyers and nonhomestead property owners resulting in large inequities in the amount of taxes paid.
According to the Legislature's calculations, passage will result in revenue losses of $12.4 billion in the next five years. These are in addition to the already mandated revenue cap passed during a special session. These revenue losses will result in unconscionable cuts to our state's infrastructure and service needs at a time when revenue shortfalls are already causing the Legislature to reduce our existing state budget.

"Thank you Don and Jamey for great letters published Sunday, November 25, 2007 in the Tallahassee Democrat. Science and history are important. We are blessed to live in America. We should appreciate the lives and freedom we have. Our freedoms will slip away down the slippery slope of political correctness if we don't keep communicating, thinking, learning and begin to elect leaders who stand up for the American way of life." "My special thanks to the Tallahassee Democrat and Bob Gabordi for permitting republishing entire articles with proper credits. It contains more information than the daily newspaper." Pace
"Finally, our two most liberal socialist progressive commissioners, Bob and Cliff, are caught reaching some good conclusions. Vote against the January 31, 2007, Super Bad Homstead Exemption and vote against more hogs at the tax trough. Our tax structure must be simplified and social entitlements must be reduced. When will our elected local officials stand up for traditional family values and reduced taxes to "get Tallahassee going?" Pace
