Tallahassee 12-year-old getting national attention for speech
By Amanda Nalley
DEMOCRAT STAFF WRITER
Twelve-year-old Sara Warmack pointed out each of her trophies and ribbons hanging above her bed, in her bathroom and even in her closet. She’s won medals for jiujitsu, ribbons for horseback riding and trophies for gymnastics. But the biggest trophy of all sits atop a fireplace mantel, a Tropicana Public Speaking Contest district-wide first-place award for her speech “America’s Freedom.”
“America was losing its freedoms,” she said about the speech, “and I didn’t want that to happen.”
No one could have guessed that when her father decided to post a video on YouTube for friends and family to view, Sara’s three-minute diatribe would go viral. YouTube has several videos of her speech, with a combined total of more than 275,000 views.
“You can make a difference. I can make a difference. And together, we will make a difference,” she said in the speech, sounding more like a seasoned politician than a seventh-grader.
Passion oozes from every word as she discusses the loss of America’s freedoms from gun control to the fairness doctrine.
“If we don’t act now, before it’s too late, we won’t have any freedoms left,” she said.
Watching her petite frame stand fearlessly at the podium, it is no wonder she is becoming a phenomenon.
“Sara for President!” YouTube commenters rally.
“I don’t care for a lot of attention, but if it means I can draw attention to what I’m talking about, which is our freedoms in peril, I’m OK with it,” she said.
Sara has given her speech three times since winning the competition in April: once for a Kiwanis club, once on the steps of the Capitol at a Tea Tax Party rally and at a Fourth of July celebration at the Tallahassee Automobile Museum.
On Saturday, Sara will deliver an updated version of her speech to an expected crowd of 10,000 at the 912 Common Sense March and Rally in Fort Worth, Texas.
Inspired by Sarah Palin’s Republican National Convention speech, which Sara admits to watching several times, Sara began writing in January.
Parents Tod and Karen helped edit the speech, but the words are all Sara’s.
“The last thing we ever expected to see was her to speak like she does,” Tod said. “She’s so adult in her presentation. Is this the same girl who was just arguing with her brother over toys?”
But beyond the mature conservative demeanor, Sara is very much a normal girl with an outstanding knack for public speaking. She is a student at Imagine School at Evening Rose, a sister to 7-year-old Ben and 15-year-old Maddie and a doting puppy trainer to her 6-month-old border collie, Daisy.
She just also happens to be a fan of FOX News, Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity.
As for a future career in politics, Sara responds politely, and in the adult manner reminiscent of her award-winning speech, “I’m not sure I’m old enough to make that decision.”
